IIGJ Students Explore Global Trends at the Hong Kong International Shows

The Indian Institute of Gems & Jewellery (IIGJ) continues to reinforce its commitment to global industry exposure by providing students with real-world learning experiences that go beyond the classroom. In April 2025, a group of IIGJ students had the opportunity to attend two of the world’s most prestigious trade fairs – the Hong Kong International Diamond, Gem & Pearl Show and the Hong Kong International Jewellery Show organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC).

These events, known as the largest gatherings in the global gems and jewellery calendar, served as a gateway for students to experience the industry’s full value chain from raw materials to finished masterpieces. Over five dynamic days, IIGJ students explored thousands of international exhibitors showcasing diamonds, coloured gemstones, pearls, and fine jewellery pieces. The two venues, AsiaWorld-Expo and the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre offered an unparalleled environment for learning about sourcing, grading, pricing, and global trade practices.

The experience was not limited to aesthetics and design. Students also engaged with emerging technologies that are shaping the future of jewellery production. Live demonstrations of CAD modelling, 3D printing, and sustainable materials highlighted how innovation continues to transform traditional craftsmanship. These sessions offered hands-on insights into how precision engineering and eco-conscious processes are influencing global jewellery manufacturing and retail.

Beyond the exhibits, the event provided a valuable platform for networking and professional exchange. Students interacted with international exhibitors, suppliers, buyers and industry leaders, gaining first-hand exposure to the commercial side of jewellery. Conversations with experts from Europe, the Middle East and Asia deepened their understanding of consumer preferences, design trends and market expectations across regions.

This kind of exposure is integral to IIGJ’s educational philosophy, which blends academic learning with practical, global engagement. By attending such global forums, students develop a keen awareness of evolving trends, international standards, and sustainability practices that define today’s jewellery industry.

Here’s what our faculty had to say about the students’ visit to the Hong Kong International Shows: Such immersive experiences are crucial for our students to understand the global jewellery ecosystem. They not only learn the technical and design aspects but also gain a sense of the scale, innovation and professionalism that drive the international market.”

As one of India’s premier institutions for gems and jewellery education, IIGJ remains dedicated to nurturing industry-ready professionals equipped with creativity, technical expertise and a global outlook. Initiatives like the Hong Kong trade fair visits reaffirm IIGJ’s role in shaping the next generation of jewellery designers and entrepreneurs. Explore our courses on the website now.
