Chairman, GJEPC
Since its inception in 1966, GJEPC has represented India’s gem and jewellery industry on numerous international platforms. It works with the Ministry of Commerce & Industries, Govt. of India, to formulate policies supporting the industry’s growth while organising numerous programmes to promote exports, such as the prestigious annual India International Jewellery Shows (IIJS) as well as other image-building exercises and trade meets. In its mission “To enable every individual associated with the Indian gems and jewellery industry to achieve their full potential” GJEPC is always engaged in activities and programmes that will further strengthen India’s base in jewellery design and manufacturing capabilities.
The gem & jewellery industry of India is one of the most dynamic and fast-growing sectors of the Indian economy. From being the world's largest manufacturer and exporter of cut and polished diamonds in 2021-22, to becoming the leading international trading centre, India is now established as the premier gem and jewellery destination for the rest of the world.
GJEPC’s vision is to continuously boost exports of gems and jewellery whilst creating a steady increase of job opportunities for trained jewellery professionals in different fields of the industry.
To meet surging industry requirements for trained manpower, GJEPC has established gem and jewellery institutes in different parts of India. It has also established laboratory centres in the gemstone hubs for gemstone research, training and testing, to support and fulfill industry requirements for gemstone testing and knowledge.
GJEPC has established training institutes in 5 cities – Delhi, Jaipur, Mumbai, Varanasi and Udupi. These institutes, with state-of-the-art facilities, up-to-date curriculum and industry-trained faculty, are solely engaged in imparting theoretical and practical knowledge and training in design, manufacturing, technical and gemmology excellence.
IIGJ works towards creating professionals trained to international standards, for the Indian gem & jewellery industry, to help establish and consolidate its position as a prominent global player. The aim is to make India the hub for skilled manpower in the gem & jewellery sector within the next few years.
To deliver knowledge about gems and jewellery to aspiring young professionals and entrepreneurs to help build their careers and businesses by developing their understanding of the beautiful world of gemstones, designing, manufacturing and management of jewellery businesses.
IIGJ-RLC (IIGJ-Research & Laboratories Centre) is the new brand identity after the merger of two well-established gemstone and jewellery laboratories operated by GJEPC. These were earlier known as Gem Testing Laboratory (GTL Jaipur) and Indian Gemmological Institute - Gem Testing Laboratory (IGI-GTL, Delhi). Over the years, IIGJ-RLC has emerged as the leading facility in the country for certification of coloured gemstones, diamonds and jewellery. Laboratory infrastructure, created at par with international standards, offers gemmological services to both domestic as well as overseas clients.
IIGJ-RLC laboratory includes highly sophisticated, sensitive and unique state-of-the-art instruments such as Laser Ablation - In Coupled Plasma – Mass Spectrometer (LA-ICPMS) for chemical fingerprinting, x-ray microCT for 2D/3D x-ray imaging, automated screening machines for loose and mounted diamonds in addition to other spectrometers such as Laser Raman, Infra-red, X-ray fluorescence, etc. These instruments have the capability of detecting the presence of various elements up to ppb (parts per billion) levels. IIGJ-RLC is the first gemmological laboratory in the country to house LA-ICPMS for its routine certification, thereby making the reports issued more authentic.
