At IIGJ-RLC, every stone under test is examined by two or more gemmologists, first by using standard gemmological equipment, and next by scientific methods using sophisticated spectrometers. Therefore, every report issued is based on the vast gemmological experience of gemmologists along with scientific facts. However, the report format varies depending on the type of category under which the certification has been carried out.
Testing is carried out by strictly following pre-determined criteria However, the tests to be performed largely depend on the form in which the gem is submitted for identification. IIGJ-RLC classifies gems and minerals according to their mineralogical and/or accepted gemmological names as per group/species/variety where applicable, based on the nomenclature guidelines drawn by the CIBJO (World Jewellery Confederation).
Enhancements/Treatments (where identifiable and applicable) are routinely identified and disclosed as per the standard disclosure policy formulated by IIGJ-RLC, and the available techniques. Disclosure policy is based on the guidelines issued by the CIBJO and Laboratory Manual Harmonisation Committee (LMHC).
All treatments are disclosed in simple and clear report wordings, enabling buyers to understand identification results readily without turning pages and searching the codes.
Identification reports for coloured gemstones are issued for a range of products, including:
Loose (polished or rough): single, pairs, sets/layouts or packets
Bead Strings: Random single stone or series of stones in string
Mounted in jewellery / decorative item (open or closed back setting): single or as group
Large carvings
Loose Gemstones – Pairs
A single report is issued for a pair of gemstones, with all details as given for a single stone report. A typical report describes gross weight, net weight of individual stones, colour, cut, dimensions of each stone, identification (group/species/variety), treatment status and any specific information (if required).
Loose Gemstones – Sets / Layouts
A single report is issued for a set or layout of gemstones, with all details as given for a single stone report. A typical report describes gross weight, net weight of individual stones, colour, cut, dimensions of each stone, identification (group/species/variety), treatment status of each stone and any specific information (if required).
Loose Gemstones – Packets
A single report is issued for a group of loose stones, of similar colour. A typical report describes gross weight, colour range, cut range (as applicable), number of stones tested, identification (group/species/variety), treatment status and any specific information (if required). Stones with variation in results are segregated and sub-packets are made with identification results (including number of stones for each result), whether species/variety or treatments. Group image, after segregation of tested stones is given on the report. For large number of stones i.e., more than 100 in a packet, option of 25% sampling is also available, where the results are based on tested 25% stones.
Strung Gemstones (Bead Strings) – Single Piece
Report issued for a single gemstone or selected few gemstones from the string, as marked by the depositor or randomly selected by the laboratory. Typical report describes gross weight, colour, cut, identification (group/species/variety), treatment status and any specific information (if required).
Strung Gemstones (Bead Strings) – Multiple / Series of stones (minimum 10 cm)
A single report is issued for all stones tested within the marked 10 cm or longer, as desired by the depositor. Typical report describes colour range, cut range, tested length, number of pieces in tested length, identification (group/species/variety), treatment status and any specific information (if required). Variations in results are mentioned on the report, with stone numbering on the image provided. If required, details are given as annexure.
Mounted Gemstones – Single Piece
Report issued for a single gemstone or selected few gemstones from the jewellery piece, as marked by the depositor. Typical report describes gross weight, colour, cut, dimensions (if mounting permits), identification (group/species/variety), treatment status and any specific information (if required).
Mounted Gemstones – Multiple / Series of Stones (With Complete Disclosure)
Single report is issued for all stones tested in the jewellery piece. Typical report describes colour range, cut range, number of pieces, identification (group/species/variety), treatment status and any specific information (if required). Variations in results are mentioned on the reports, with stone numbering on the image provided. If required, details are given as annexure.

general terms & conditions
IIGJ-RLC Jaipur may change, revise, amend or modify these Terms and Conditions from time to time. IIGJ-RLC Jaipur shall provide Customer with written notice of any such changes, revisions, amendments or modifications, provided, however, that any such changes, revisions, amendments or modifications shall become effective without any further action by any party and that they shall not apply to any orders placed and accepted prior to the effective date of such changes, revisions, amendments or modifications.
Limitation of Identification Service
Treatment identification is obtained based on the current knowledge at the time of examination. Results given for the same item may lead to different results with continuing research. Often, gemstones (example, yellow sapphires) are irradiated to modify / improve the colour. Irradiation is unidentifiable by the current gemmological tests and hence, its presence or absence will not be indicated on the IIGJ-RLC identification reports. Colour of certain stones (example, orange –yellow sapphires) may fade with the time. IIGJ-RLC Jaipur shall not be held responsible for any compensation if the colour of stones (including sapphires) fade after the certification. In certain cases, because of the lack of evidence / characteristic features in the samples or lack of some specific equipment, the sample may be returned without any identification report. IIGJ-RLC Jaipur in routine employs non-destructive methods of identification, however, in certain cases destructive methods shall be employed on the permission of the Customer / depositor.

Origin Services
In addition to the gemmological analyses by a highly skilled and experienced team of gemmologists, and the use of various advanced spectrometers, origin reports are based on chemical fingerprinting using Laser Ablation-Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). IIGJ RLC is the first and only gem lab in the country with this state-of-the-art analytical equipment.
Jewellery Screening
Whether it is a single gemstone or multiple gemstones of the same type, or various types of gemstones mounted in a single piece of jewellery, or a decorative item, IIGJ RLC’s jewellery reports cover all aspects in a single report. Our unbiased approach in mounted diamond grading makes our lab one to search for.
Diamond
Diamond reports cover various aspects of a diamond from identification and separation of natural diamond from synthetic (lab-grown) or imitation diamond and detection of treatments, to determination of quality grades, whether mounted or loose.
