Indian Institute of Gems & Jewellery, Udupi was set up by GJEPC in association with National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad, and is a first-of-its-kind institute in the region. By setting up IIGJ, GJEPC envisions a far greater productive use of available talent through proper training and guidance, and also providing exciting careers opportunities to the youth of Udupi and its surrounding region.
With over 100 retail stores and a workforce of more than 5000 people, Udupi boasts a rich jewellery heritage. The institute aims to provide training in various aspects of hand-crafted jewellery making, which could eventually lead to employment opportunities for them in the dynamic gem & jewellery sector. The institute also aims to enhance the skills of the existing workforce, already engaged in various aspects of jewellery making. Creation of such a trained workforce and its upgradation will foster much greater development of the local jewellery industry.

The foundation stone was laid by Hon’ble Minister of State (IC), Commerce & Industry, Govt. of India, Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman. Also present on the occasion were Smt. Shobha Karandlaje, Member of Parliament and Shri Manoj Dwivedi, IAS, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India and other dignitaries.

Large Space Dedicated to Jewellery Training Infrastructure
Located in the heart of the city, IIGJ Udupi is a large centre with modern infrastructure, with its classrooms and labs spread over a total area of 3800 sq.ft.
CAD Lab with 10 Computers and the Latest Jewellery Design Software
The CAD Lab is equipped with the most advanced jewellery design software such as Rhinoceros and Matrix, along with Adobe Photoshop, and has an overall capacity of 10 students working on the computers at a time.
Manufacturing Workshop with Modern Machinery for Jewellery Making and Casting
The manufacturing workshop at IIGJ Udupi is a full-fledged jewellery manufacturing unit. It is equipped with modern machinery and tools that are required for imparting training in jewellery manufacturing. Safety precautions are of utmost importance and is strictly followed during the students' training. Thus, students get hands on experience working at the bench. Each bench is equipped with a full set of tools and consumables required for the work.
